THE SCIENCE
OF LASER HAIR REMOVAL
Originally lasers were tested for other uses on the body. One side effect of the treatments was the loss of hair. Laser hair removal was invented in 1970's by Dr. Rox Anderson. Dr. Anderson began researching what was causing the hair loss and found much of the information that we know today about laser hair removal. Laser hair removal is the process of a precisely calibrated laser beam targeting melanin (or pigment) in a hair follicle, then heating the follicle and destroying its ability to re-grow hair. This laser beam passes harmlessly through the skin and the energy of the beam targets the hair follicle in a process called selective photothermolysis. Selective is used because it targets the follicle and not the skin. Photo means light and thermolysis means to destroy using heat.
There are many factors that can affect the number of treatments people need for laser hair removal. Skin color, hair color, hair thickness, hormones and medications may all contribute to the number of treatments needed. Science has taught us that there are three distinct cycles or phases and only one phase will allow for the destruction of the hair follicle (this is called the anagen stage or the growth phase). One important note is that nearly all people will require touch-ups to the treated area. After your series of treatments you may go many months to years without seeing any hair re-growth. The hair re-growth that you will see will be minimal after your series of treatments. |
